The Tranzac needs your help

Hello,

You may have heard that the Tranzac, which is the club that owns the building that the Toronto Zine Library is housed in, is in dire financial straits.

They need to raise a bunch of money by the end of the year in order to secure the future of the club. While the situation is dire, it is also manageable. The targets set are reasonable, and if enough people give money and attend upcoming fundraising events, the money will be raised, and the Tranzac will survive.

The Toronto Zine Library would not exist without the support of the Tranzac. Our operations are entirely outside of the "market," and if we were forced to find a new space, we would never be able to afford to pay rent on it. Please support the Toronto Zine Library by supporting the Tranzac. Become a Tranzac member for just 25 dollars, or donate however much money you would by clicking here:

24hr zine challenge kick off -- WED JULY 28!

Happy International Zine Month!

To celebrate, the Toronto Zine Library is participating in the 24 hour zine challenge and we would love for you to join us! We are hosting a kick off event this Wednesday, July 28th starting at 6pm and going strong until the Tranzac Club closes.

What is the 24 hour zine challenge, you ask?
A yearly event where one attempts to make a 24 page zine from start to finish in 24 hours. From initial idea right through to photocopying/collating/stapling your zine. More information, list of this year's participants and sign up can be found here: http://24hourzines.com/

(Please note that you dont *have* to register and/or send your zine in when its finished. We encourage you participate to whatever degree you are most comfortable with. Or, you are welcome to just come and hang out at the TZL and cheer participants on!)

Bring your ideas and if youre able a snack to share while we hang out, listen to music, and get a start on our 24 hour zines! Some supplies will be available (paper, glue, scissors, magazine clippings, a couple of typewriters, a long arm stapler) but please do bring your favourite or necessary zine making supplies. Conveniently, there is a 24 hour Kinkos a half-block away!

Also, similar to the event folks at the Independent Pubishing Resource Center (http://www.iprc.org/) in Portland Oregon held a few days ago, we will be streaming our 24 hour zine challenge event live! If you're unable to join us, bookmark http://www.ustream.tv/channel/toronto-zine-library-24hr-zine-challenege and tune in on Wednesday starting at 5pm EST and participate alongside us from wherever you may be.

The Rainbow Connection: Richard Hunt, Gay Muppeteer

This event is on Monday, July 5, from 7-9pm. Please come!

"The Rainbow Connection: Richard Hunt, Gay Muppeteer" chronicles the life and work of Richard Hunt, a central puppeteer on the international blockbusters Sesame Street and The Muppet Show. Hunt performed characters such as Scooter, Statler (in the balcony), Janice, Beaker and even Miss Piggy in her early drag queen days. He was also an out gay man, dying of AIDS-related causes in 1992 at the tragically young age of 40.

A multimedia event presented by Jessica Max Stein, the author of the zine (and soon-to-be full-length biography) The Rainbow Connection: Richard Hunt, Gay Muppeteer.

As with all TZL events, it is free and all-ages, but space is limited!

Anxiety can be a shame and fear that we hide away in our secretchests. One of the reasons we started this project in the first placewas to chip away at the isolation that many of us have internalized.This zine is a testament to the courage it takes to put our storiesout there. We wanted to share out anxious bowels, sleepless nights,how we keep it together, how we lost it, things that make us anxious,things that make us feel safe, intersections of other mental/healthproblems, coming-of-age anxiety, date anxiety, embarrassing moments,symptoms of support, harm reduction, resources, how we did ourselvesproud, and the heroics of making it!!!!!!!!!

long time zine maker jeff miller has a book coming out on invisible publishing called GHOST PINE: ALL STORIES TRUE. come celebrate at the gladstone hotel tomorrow night.

In thirteen years of publishing the influential zine Ghost Pine, author and editor Jeff Miller did not stray from its motto: “All Stories True.” Despite this, readers frequently claimed that his autobiographical stories were far-fetched. At the launch of his eagerly awaited collection, Ghost Pine: All Stories True (Invisible Publishing), Miller will take the stage to discuss the history of the zine and do some fact-checking. Presenting photographs, letters and audio cassettes from his archives in conjunction with his stories, he will light-heartedly play with truth and memory, fact and representation. Marc Glassman, Executive Director of This Is Not A Reading Series (TINARS) will host the evening. – A TINARS event presented with Invisible Publishing, Gladstone Hotel, NOW Magazine, Torontoist.com, and Take Five On CIUT.

A Workshop for Beginners

Facilitated By Tara Bursey

Thursday, April 15, 7:00-9:30pm

Make a zine! Learn about the colourful and subversive history of underground publications and self-publishing! Have fun! Explore the zine medium and self-publishing by learning the roots of the zine, looking at examples of zines from the past and the present, and discussing local zine resources such as zine libraries, annual zine fairs, and methods of distribution. For the last half of the workshop, attendees will make their own fast-and-furious 8 page mini-zine, and will get advice on format, construction, and production. Materials will be provided, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own writing implements and collage materials.

The Queen West Art Crawl is pleased to announce that we are currently seeking submissions for ‘Independent Press’. This new section of our Parkdale Crafters Market is focused on casting the spotlight on Toronto’s left-of-centre independent publications.

This includes, but certainly is not limited to; ZINES, COMICS, SILK-SCREENED POSTERS, SHOW POSTERS, AND PRINT BASED ART IN GENERAL.
This is a great opportunity to showcase your work to a wide audience and meet like-minded individuals.

Zine Dream II is an a zine fair organized by jesjit gill and laura mcCoy. It's a place to sell art zines, comics, chap books, prints, original work, multiples, tapes, vinyl, posters, ect. with various performances throughout the day(comedy, music and maybe some performance art) and a few djs too.

if you are interested, would you mind letting me know and also, getting that 10 bucks to me before hand so we know that we have enough of a commitment to go ahead with it. you can email us the money or drop it by or we could arrange to meet up. The newly-formed Zine Library Outreach Committee presents its first event!

We'll be screening the yet-to-be-released expanded version of Between Resistance and Community: The Long Island DIY Punk Scene. The new version includes deleted scenes, extra live footage, and follow up segments on Latterman, scene members, and women in punk.

After the film, Anna will be facilitating a sewing workshop so bring an article of clothing that needs mending! We'll have needles and thread and everything you need to sew on your new patches and fix that hole in the crotch of your jeans. There may also be vegan baked goods but no promises!

Our friend Ryan at Methinks Presents, which runs the gallery Project 165 in Kensington Market, has organized a traveling art show, called We Made a Deal with the Devil that will tour between Toronto and Halifax in August. The show has a zine component, and Ryan is looking for zines to be included in the tour!

If you have multiple copies of a zine you would like to see distributed across Eastern Canada, please get in touch with us or with Ryan. Heart Beat 960 is a new storefront/ gallery/ studio/ event space, 960 Queen St at Shaw. Our focus is on locally-produced, artist-run culture. We aim to be community-oriented, accessible and inclusive, multi-disciplinary and generally radical.

We’re looking for local artists and craftspeople to display, sell and make their wares in the space: Art, crafts, clothing, accessories, cds and records, publications, anything hand-made and local.

We also have studio space for rent and a back garden for events and performances. We will be showing the space at the end of May and opening the week of June 01st. Our opening party is on Friday June 05th!!!!!

GALLERY/// RETAIL

Our primary focus is on dividing and renting space to artists and designers, but we will consider consignment and other models. We aim to be affordable based on people’s abilities and needs. Retail space can be rented by fixture, rack width or wall area.

We’re open to one- or two-week art shows, art in the retail space and other arrangements. We can help you organize and promote a good opening, and staff the gallery most days of the week.

STUDIO SPACE /////////

The studio area downstairs will comfortably house about five artists: crafting, sewing, silkscreening, music making, other uses. It is a low but large and clean basement space.

EVENTS/ WORKSHOPS

We are lining up a full schedule of events, from weekday workshops, readings, speakers and acoustic sets, to djs and bands and larger art parties on the weekend. We have a back yard with a small stage and are hoping to host noisier music downstairs. We can provide licensed events and help with organization and promotion.

Consideration will go multi-use or longer term arrangements, and to those not able to afford much but doing cool stuff.

It was pretty stupid of us to have left it in the library (it was well-enough hidden, we thought), but somebody has stolen all of the money we have made over the past few months (roughly $120) from the sales of zines, memberships, and whatnot. This is shitty, especially since we had just placed an order for about 90 dollars worth of zines. I'm not really sure who thinks "Hey, I bet a volunteer-run and financed zine library would be a great place to steal money from," but those are the breaks, and the world is sometimes a shitty place.

The Laurier Students´ Public Interest Research Group has invited the Toronto Zine Library to facilitate a workshop on Zinemaking & Social Change as part of the LSPIRG´s Community Innovation Certificate program!

¨This program is geared towards Laurier students, social innovators, sustainable entrepreneurs, change agents, enterprising non-profits, anyone who is interested in learning about being an effective change agent and applying creative problem-solving to their organization and their community. Over a period of three years, this pilot project will offer various sessions on issues ranging from grant writing, community organizing to strategic planning, financial planning, social entrepreneurship and other more innovative training opportunities.¨

RESIDENCY APPLICATION – 2009
The residency program runs seasonally at The Roberts Street Social Centre, from June to September each year. Residencies are two weeks long, and residents are provided with space, equipment and support for their project as well as living space in a garden shed in the backyard of the Centre. We encourage projects that relate to the mandate of the Roberts Street Social Centre, in any medium.
Mission Statement:
The Roberts Street Social Centre is a space for people to come together to share skills, knowledge, and resources. It is a collection of projects dedicated to providing free or affordable access to independent and alternative media, art, and education. We support critical, creative projects and inspire social change with DIY (do it yourself), non-hierarchical, and consensus-based approaches. We aim to be active in our communities by collaborating with other groups and projects. We strive to be inclusive, aware of barriers and discrimination, and welcoming to all ages.
We house:
• the Ink Storm Screenprinting Collective studio
• the Anchor Archive Zine Library
• the “Crow's Nest” space for events, workshops, and meetings
• an artist and zinemaking residency
• kitchen and bathroom facilities
• a yard with firepit and garden
Residency Program:
Residencies are two weeks long, and the residency program runs from June to September. Locals are welcome to apply, but priority will be given to out-of-town applicants.
Residents are housed in the shed, an actual garden shed in the backyard. Accommodation in the shed is simple and rustic – there is a bunk bed, several shelves and hooks, adaptable workspace, and an extension cord provides electricity. A kitchen and bathroom are available inside the Social Centre house. Life in the shed could also be described as urban camping. The rest of the yard has a vegetable and flower garden, a fire pit, and benches. We offer you the use of a bicycle while you’re here. Billeting may also be an option.
We are interested in proposals for projects that embody the same sort of do-it-yourself spirit as the Social Centre, and that contribute in some way to the community and/or the space. Projects should be executed or completed during the two-week residency, so please try to keep your project fairly simple! Two weeks is not much time. You don't need to have a finished product but we do ask that you share your work with us in some way, such as a public event – a reading, release, launch, art show, performance, workshop, whatever – either at the Centre or a more appropriate venue. We will help you plan and promote this event. We are interested in any sorts of proposals – not necessarily zine-based (although that is certainly welcome). We offer you support and help executing your project, and access to supplies that we have here.

The Roberts Street Social Centre, located at 5684 Roberts Street, is a small Maritime-style house with a bathroom and kitchen for you to use. The Anchor Archive Zine Library occupies the front room of the house and is open twice weekly to the public. We have thousands of zines and books, for browsing and lending to members. We have an old and slow iMac computer with internet (and wireless access), scanner, printer as well as zine making tools like typewriters, stationary supplies, Letraset, clip art, etc. The back room is a collectively-run screenprinting studio (Ink Storm), which is available for you to use as well and has open hours twice a week the same time as the zine library. There is a light table to burn screens using photo-emulsion, silkscreens for printing on fabric and paper that you can use, and other supplies.
Halifax is a small city on the east coast of Canada, about twelve hours drive from either Boston or Montreal. The Roberts Street Social Centre is located just off Agricola Street in the North End. There is a small and welcoming community of activists, artists, musicians and neighbourhood people to meet. Other great resources available locally include the Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative, Centre for Art Tapes, the eyelevel gallery, the Khyber ICA, Halifax Coalition Against Poverty, Bike Again Co-operative, the Halifax North Public Library, and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. We love collaborating with other local groups, and can help make connections and suggest contacts that would apply to your project.
Due to the very public nature of the Roberts Street Social Centre, and the very rustic nature of the shed, we realize this residency program is not for everyone. Residents must be prepared to work in a busy, social environment with little privacy, be comfortable with dust, the occasional spider web and be fairly self-sufficient with meals and housekeeping. If you have any questions or concerns, or would like to explore the possibility of billeting, please feel free to get in touch with us before the application deadline.

THE SITUATION!

Create the Situation is looking for contributors. We want you to create the situation!

Inspired by the popular Yippie slogan "create the condition you describe", Create the Situation provides an opportunity for a broader awareness for creative acts of daily activism through the creation of short run zines that provide suggestions for ways to engage with ones city. Ideas from previous issues have included DIY pothole repair instructions and starting a neighborhood welcoming committee to get to know the neighbors who already live in your neighborhood that you just don't know yet.

In the Tipping Point author Malcolm Gladwell writes that a revolution isn't one huge monumental event, but instead a series of small things that build up and make a difference. These ideas for small acts that can be done in the neighborhoods and institutions that make up ones city can in turn lead to making changes in their social engagement with their environment and their neighbors that can lead to at the very least engaged citizenship.

This project is intended to inspire people to take these actions into their own hands, to create not only engaged communities, artists, activists and creative types, but ultimately to create engaged citizens.

We are looking for between 4-12 people to create issues of CTS. (Link to the issues we made). What are your ideas for how to interact with the people and places in your city in potentially unexpected ways?

Accepted individuals will receive a small honorarium as well as printed issues of the quarterly zine. Create the Situation will be printed in the DIY spirit of zine publications. The black and white photocopied booklet will list ideas for how to engage with not only ones neighbors, but with the institutions and infrastructures of the city in unexpected ways. Suggestions might include ways to use your local library, music stores, art galleries, and parks as well as ways to engage with people in your community and inventive solutions for city maintenance. CTS will also be available online as a PDF, as well as mailed out to subscribers and provided free locally in Portland, OR, Winnipeg, MB and the hometown of each contributing author.

TZL @ Ladyfest 2008!

Danielle and Tara of the TZL Collective will be facilitating a workshop titled Zinemaking for Social Change at this year's Ladyfest Toronto! In this open-format workshop/discussion, we will talk about the history of zinemaking within countercultural movements from the 1920 to the present, methods of making and distributing zines and pamphlets as well as the Toronto Zine Library and it's activities.

"Ladyfest Toronto is a four-day arts, culture and music festival. We are a non-profit, grassroots, do-it-yourself collective who seek to promote urban feminism. We work from a framework that is pro-feminist, trans-inclusive, pro-diversity and anti-oppressive. We seek to build community among Toronto's feminist businesses, artists, activists and academic community. We believe that art is a powerful form of resistance and hope to incite dialogue about contemporary feminist issues in our city. We will be providing a venue for women to express themselves and showcase their work free of sexism, classism, racism, and homophobia; as well as other forms of oppression.

We believe that politics can be fun and hope to facilitate political action and create tools for feminist networking at our annual event. ERICK LYLE is the author of 'On the Lower Frequencies: A Secret History of the City' published by Soft Skull. Still proudly unemployed, Erick has been setting up punk shows and protests, touring with his various bands and editing his zine, SCAM, since 1991. His writing has
appeared on NPR's This American Life, in Raritan and the San Francisco Bay Guardian and various book anthologies. He is currently playing music in Black Rainbow and Onion Flavored Rings. He lives in San
Francisco. Erick will be reading with travelmate Jeff Miller, the creator of the Montreal/Ottawa zine Ghost Pine. "Everyone talks about 'guerrilla art,' but Lyle and his crew are the real deal, Viet Cong in the interstices of gentrification."- Mike Davis

CATHY CROWE is the author/editor of Dying for a Home. She wrote the book with homeless activists including Nancy Baker, Brian Boyd, Kevin Clarke, Dri et al. Cathy
Crowe calls herself a 'street nurse,' a term coined by a homeless man in downtown Toronto. She has been nursing and organizing with and for the homeless for about twenty years. 1998 saw Cathy's co-founding of
the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee. Some years later Cathy played a key role supporting the hundred-plus homeless people at Toronto's TENT CITY - people who ultimately won housing. Cathy will be reading from Dying for a Home. Reading with Cathy Crowe will be the legendary homeless activist and artist/poet Dri., who's life story and creative work is featured in Dying for a Home.

JOEY COMEAU is the author of the novel Lockpick Pornography and the short story collection It's too Late to Say I'm Sorry both published by The Loose Teeth Press.

Please join us for a talk with special guest Luke You of Melbourne, Australia, brought to you by the Toronto Zine Library Collective.

Luke You makes a free weekly paper zine called 'You'. He has published a copy every week since November 2001. The zine usually takes the form of an anonymous hand written letter sealed with staples in a paper bag. The zine is produced in the city Luke You lives in - Melbourne,Australia. Luke has been publishing zines anonymously in Melbourne since 1994. Luke is also one of the coordinators and one of the founding members of the Melbourne zine store Sticky. Sticky is dedicated to promoting and distributing zines and artist-books and has been getting the zines
to the kids since April 2001. His talk will cover his involvement in the Australian zine scene, his own zine 'You" as well as his involvment in the Melbourne zine store Sticky. This is the final gig in his zine world tour which took in Melbourne, Chicago, Bloomington and Toronto.
